SUNLAND PARK, NM—DECEMBER 29, 2012—With a jet-propelled start, top qualifer Our First Corona nailed down a driving neck win in the 46th running of the $126,512 Sunland Park Winter Quarter Horse Derby on Saturday. |
RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM- JULY 22, 2012 - Carters Cookie becomes the first stakes winner for champion Carters Cartel. The best time in American Quarter Horse racing to becoming a rising star is right now, and Carters Cookie is the rising star at the right time after an impressive win in the Grade 1, $700,000 Rainbow Futurity. Carters Cookie broke well from the seventh post position, lugged in midway through the race and easily held off Vancouver Moon for the 1 1/4-length victory in :19.612 for 400 yards. “This is a really good horse,” winning rider G.R. Carter Jr. said. “We knew he could run this spring; we knew he had talent, but I have to commend (trainer) Mike (Joiner) for waiting with him.” Waiting on Carters Cookie also meant that he was not gaining experience, but that was not a factor in the Rainbow Futurity. “In his trial (his first start) he got the lead and raced a little green,” Carter said. “Today he was really focused and ready for a big race. He blasted away from there and was a little more seasoned.” Owned by Mark Allen, Leonard Blach and Butch Southway, Carters Cookie was purchased by Allen for $40,000 at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale on Joiner’s advice. After the Rainbow Futurity trial win, Blach and Southway became co-owners with Allen. “I’ve been watching him all summer since I’m around the Joiner barn,” said Southway. “Before the trials, Mark asked me if I wanted to buy a piece of him and after the trials I asked him if he still wanted to sell. He said, ‘Yes.’ So, I bought my interest in him.” Carters Cookie’s breeding is one of the factors that attracted Joiner to the gelding at the sale. “I always like Strawfly Special mares and he’s out of a Strawfly Special mare who is a half sister to One Famous Eagle,” said Joiner. “Besides I knew Carters Cartel from running against him and he’s a great horse.” Joiner also appreciates training for Allen. “He just says to do what you want. That allowed me to wait and let the horse tell me when he was ready to race. We worked him (a fastest-of-the-day work on June 12) and that said he was ready to run.” |

One of two impressive trial winners from trainer Mike Joiner, An Absolut Diamond put away a challenge from One Blazin Kimbo to win by a half-length and clocked the 400 yards in a rapid 19.003 seconds with a tail wind blowing. The son of first crop sire Ketel Won, owned by Sandy Farris, Marc Jungers and Lisa McMinn, earned a 96 speed index. Farris and McFinn bred the gelding from the Strawfly Special mare, The Millennium Star. Joiner’s first winner on the day was Krazy Good who was timed in a good 19.062. Both trial winners were ridden by Salvador Martinez. Krazy Good scored his second consecutive win, in three starts this season, for owner Bauer Farm, LLC. The Ketel Won gelding, out of Thirty Fourth Street by Dean Miracle, came into the race off an impressive 1-½ length maiden victory at Zia Park on October 13. Barbara and Robert Bauer are the breeders. |
Our First Corona's second win of the meet was worth a large $58,461 for owners Kevin and Robin Allred. The Sunland Winter QH Derby champion owns 4 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third from 11 starts. With a a building six figure bankroll, the rising stakes winner should be a major force in stakes races next year. |
